IWSG Blog Post - Word Processing

7/3/2024

Sorry I’m late posting today! I completely forgot until this morning.

The awesome co-hosts for the July 3 posting of the IWSG are JS Pailly, Rebecca Douglass, Pat Garcia, Louise-Fundy Blue, and Natalie Aguirre!

July 3 question - What are your favorite writing processing (e.g. Word, Scrivener, yWriter, Dabble), writing apps, software, and tools? Why do you recommend them? And which one is your all time favorite that you cannot live without and use daily or at least whenever you write?

I have always used MS Word. It’s not that I recommend it or prefer it. It’s just comfortable, like broken-in fuzzy slippers. I know where to find every setting, feature, and formatting option. My ancient computer still has the old Word, from before subscriptions were required. When my beloved dinosaur someday crashes, I will have to find a new word processor, because I am NOT paying a monthly fee. My husband wants to get a Mac, so Pages is likely in my future. I’ve used Pages on an iPad, and it’s okay. Not as comfy as slippers, but perhaps a running shoe I could get used to.

I like Word for the same reasons as you do. I've heard other people say you can't just buy Word anymore. I'll have to keep using it as I need it for work.

If you end up on Windows, Open Office is a pretty similar interface. I don't know when, but I guess I eventually updated to Word 2021. I think I bought it on sale for like $5. Word is comfortable, but with my multi-POV brain, I needed a better organization system, which I found in yWriter. I don't think that's got a Mac version, though.

Microsoft Office suite is an annual fee, but the point is well taken. I hate that everything is by subscription, and I'm not all that sure I like updates, which go and change how things are done.

Updates overestimate my learning skills, So does my IT husband.
Teaching computers to do their job, he's brilliant at rescuing me from accidental catastrophe, but insists that I need to learn to use new sofrware packages.

Change, just for the sake of it ? IT department, who loves fixing retired computers, keeps warning me about Word, which is whyt he wants me to get used to something differnt -
Different kind of update, but a change to ID photo-recognition recently invalidated all my other papers - because the document that failed, repeatedly, was my passport ..
A brief experience of being illegal ?
